Before you hire: what to check

Hiring someone into your home is a big call, and the profile is only the starting point. A good interview and a few checks save you a lot later. Here is what experienced UAE families look at:

• Ask about real, hands-on experience in UAE homes - the tasks, the ages of children, how long they stayed.
• Get two references from past employers and actually call them. A five-minute call tells you more than a CV.
• Test communication in the interview. Indonesian candidates usually speak Bahasa Indonesia and some English or Arabic, but make sure it works for your family.
• Check current visa status and what the paperwork will involve before you agree to anything.
• Run a short trial and write down the duties, working hours, weekly day off and salary before the start date.
